Why we LOVE our library!

April 27, 2009

April 13 – 17 was National Library Week and students and teachers wrote what they LOVE about the NPES library when they came in throughout the week. Here are some of the things they said:

“I love my library because there are lots of cool books!” Abigail C.

“Our library has the best librarians in the universe.”

“I love my library because there is a fantastic selection of books here! I feel a good relaxed feeling when I am here. I LOVE MY LIBRARY!” Brooke F.

“I like the library because when you open the books you can imagine anything!” Garrett C.

“I love our wonderful library at NPES! Everyone in the library is VERY kind and always eager to help me find a marvelous book” Mrs. Mabry

“I like the school library because the librarians are super nice and helpful and our library has tons of books!” Ratna P.

“Background music, scrapbook pics, new books, displays, Mrs. Byrd Fort, and Mrs. Gobbi” Mrs. Davis (5th grade)

“New Providence has all the books I have wanted. Also it is a big library with a large selection of books.” Courtney A.

So many nice things! I’m so happy you LOVE your library!

The Cat in the Hat at NPES!

March 9, 2009

Last week, NPES celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday and Read Across America Week with a visit from The Cat in the Hat! Other activities included green eggs and ham in the cafeteria, Dr. Seuss BINGO, a guess how many RED fish contest, and a school wide READ IN! We had a great time – be sure to take a look at the pictures on our photo site!

READ FEST is coming soon - mark your calendars to attend on Saturday, March 21! April Pulley Sayre, Cocky, local authors, book and food vendors, and much more will be waiting for you that day! READ FEST is at Lexington High School from 10am – 1pm. Hope to see you there!

April Pulley Sayre is visiting New Providence Elementary School on March 23! April Pulley Sayre is a non-fiction author with books all about animals and nature. Her books are for sale now in the library. Learn more about her at her website!

Happy reading,

Mrs. Byrd Fort

What’s going on in the NPES LMC?

February 10, 2009

We are very busy in the Library Media Center!

Our lions are voting for their favorite South Carolina Picture Book Award nominee and for their favorite South Carolina Children’s Book Award nominee. The book that wins for our school will be announced next week. The book that wins for the entire state will be announced in March! What an exciting time! The South Carolina Book Award program is great – every year a new list of 20 WONDERFUL books is announced. Students throughout the state read the books and then vote for their favorite. It’s a “kid’s choice” award!

We have a new program starting up in the LMC – NPES Lion Cubs! This is a storytime for younger siblings and future lions. We’ll meet once a month and get to know the library and the librarian (me – Mrs. Byrd Fort) – I’m so excited to meet our future lions! Our first storytime is February 24 at 1:45pm.

Our very first author visit is coming soon! Non-fiction author, April Pulley Sayre, will be at NPES on March 23. You can get a sneak peek at READ FEST on March 21, because she’ll be there too! Watch the NPES website and this blog for more information about both the author visit and READ FEST!

Happy Reading!

Happy October!

October 14, 2008

It’s October!

As always, there is plenty of activity going on in the Library Media Center! Kindergarten and 1st graders are reading the South Carolina Picture Book Award Nominees and starting this week, I will be telling 2nd – 5th graders all about the South Carolina Picture Book and Children’s Book Award Programs. One thing I’m very excited about is our South Carolina Book Award Book Club. Starting October 28, I will be reading aloud some of the book award nominees. The book club will be open to 2nd – 5th graders and will be 7am – 7:30am in the Library Media Center. The club won’t be every day– there will be signs posted in the library telling students when the book club is. Teachers and parents are welcome to join as well!

Trying to think of a good book to check out? This month, books about leaves, pumpkins, apples, and MONSTERS are popular in the NPES Library Media Center.

Happy reading!

September Updates

September 17, 2008

Wow! September has been a busy month in the Library Media Center!

We’ve kicked off our birthday book club. Students with August, September, October, and November birthdays received a letter about the club last week. Thank you so much to everyone who has sent in a check! Our first birthday book club birthday party will be in November.

September is National Library Card Sign Up Month and to celebrate, the library is having a contest! Students and teachers who show Mrs. Byrd Fort or Mrs. Gobbi their public library card will be entered in a prize drawing. There will be one winner per grade level and a teacher winner. Good luck!

Love,

Mrs. Byrd Fort

Summer reading celebration

September 5, 2008

Our summer reading celebration was today! We had a wonderful time eating watermelon, grapes, and marshmellows! Michelle Williams from the Lexington County Public Library told stories and everyone had a lot of fun! Thank you to all students who “caught the reading bug” over the summer!

Love,

Mrs. Byrd Fort

Summer Reading Logs due Friday!

August 28, 2008

Don’t forget! To be invited to our summer reading celebration, you need to show Mrs. Byrd Fort or Mrs. Gobbi your reading log from a summer reading program by tomorrow (Friday, August 29)! The summer reading celebration is on September 5.

Happy reading!

Grand Opening!

August 27, 2008

Today was an exciting day at NPES! Today was the first day for checkout in the library! Now, when students come to the library, they will be able to checkout a library book (or 2).

If your child is in kindergarten or 1st grade, they may check out 1 book at a time. 2nd – 5th graders may check out 2 books at a time. Every class has a “library day” where they are scheduled to visit the library, however, if a student finishes their book early or needs another book, they can come to the library with teacher permission at any time.

Happy reading!

Love,

Mrs. Byrd Fort
