Summer Reading!

June 1, 2009

Hello NPES readers!

We want you to READ, READ, READ over the summer! A packet full of summer reading suggestions and ideas went home last week.

We will have a Summer Reading Celebration at the beginning of the 2009 - 2010 school year. There are two ways to be invited -

1. Participate in the summer reading program at the Lexington County Public Library. Get your name on the honor roll OR show Mrs. Byrd Fort your public library reading log when we return to school and you will be invited to the celebration!

2. Participate in the No Book Left Unread summer reading program. Just keep track of how many pages you read over the summer on the reading log that was sent home. Bring that reading log to Mrs. Byrd Fort at the beginning of the school year and you will be invited to the celebration!

You don’t have to do both - you can pick one!

Happy reading!

Last week for library book checkout!

May 18, 2009

The 2008 - 2009 school year is winding down!

This is the last week for library book checkout. All library books are due by May 29. If a book is lost, is must be paid for by the end of the school year. Look everywhere for those lost library books! They can end up in the strangest places :)

Love,

Mrs. Byrd Fort

Why we LOVE our library!

April 27, 2009

April 13 - 17 was National Library Week and students and teachers wrote what they LOVE about the NPES library when they came in throughout the week. Here are some of the things they said:

“I love my library because there are lots of cool books!” Abigail C.

“Our library has the best librarians in the universe.”

“I love my library because there is a fantastic selection of books here! I feel a good relaxed feeling when I am here. I LOVE MY LIBRARY!” Brooke F.

“I like the library because when you open the books you can imagine anything!” Garrett C.

“I love our wonderful library at NPES! Everyone in the library is VERY kind and always eager to help me find a marvelous book” Mrs. Mabry

“I like the school library because the librarians are super nice and helpful and our library has tons of books!” Ratna P.

“Background music, scrapbook pics, new books, displays, Mrs. Byrd Fort, and Mrs. Gobbi” Mrs. Davis (5th grade)

“New Providence has all the books I have wanted. Also it is a big library with a large selection of books.” Courtney A.

So many nice things! I’m so happy you LOVE your library!

It’s National Library Week!

April 13, 2009
National Library Week is April 12 - 18!

National Library Week is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries, librarians, and library workers. It is also a time to promote library use and support.

Here is how NPES will celebrate National Library Week

*As students and the NPES community come to the library throughout the week, share with us why you LOVE your library.

*On Tuesday, April 14 at the Lexington Main Public Library from 6:00-8:00 pm, families can get a library card, check out books, and connect with other readers at our Meet @ Main event! Oak Grove Elementary, Midway Elementary and Pleasant Hill Elementary readers will join us too! Porkchop Productions will present “Rip Van Winkle” at 6:30 pm — should be DREAMY (and it’s FREE!)

*On Thursday, April 16 at the South Carolina State House, NPES 3rd graders will participate in the South Carolina READ IN on the State House grounds.

Here are other ways YOU can celebrate (at home and at school)

*Visit this website:

http://www.statelibrary.sc.gov/index.php?option=com_philaform&form_id=2&Itemid=1

and tell the South Carolina State Library why you LOVE your library

*Read a book based on a movie and then rent the movie - compare the two (a great “at home” activity)

*Eat food from a book!

        - Read Everything on a Waffle and make up a batch of waffles (serve with EVERYTHING)

        - Read Wild Boars Cook and bake some chocolate chip cookies

        - Read a Dr. Seuss book and make Dr. Seuss hats out of red and white life savers

        - Read Hansel and Gretel and make a gingerbread house

*Take a picture of each student in your room with their favorite book

*Have students survey teachers and other students about what their favorite book is, graph the results

*Have students create bookmarks based on their favorite book

Have fun!

Happy National Library Week!

Love,

Mrs. Byrd Fort

What’s going on in the NPES LMC?

February 10, 2009

We are very busy in the Library Media Center!

Our lions are voting for their favorite South Carolina Picture Book Award nominee and for their favorite South Carolina Children’s Book Award nominee. The book that wins for our school will be announced next week. The book that wins for the entire state will be announced in March! What an exciting time! The South Carolina Book Award program is great - every year a new list of 20 WONDERFUL books is announced. Students throughout the state read the books and then vote for their favorite. It’s a “kid’s choice” award!

We have a new program starting up in the LMC - NPES Lion Cubs! This is a storytime for younger siblings and future lions. We’ll meet once a month and get to know the library and the librarian (me - Mrs. Byrd Fort) - I’m so excited to meet our future lions! Our first storytime is February 24 at 1:45pm.

Our very first author visit is coming soon! Non-fiction author, April Pulley Sayre, will be at NPES on March 23. You can get a sneak peek at READ FEST on March 21, because she’ll be there too! Watch the NPES website and this blog for more information about both the author visit and READ FEST!

Happy Reading!

Hello NPES Family!

It’s been busy in the NPES Library Media Center.

The South Carolina Book Award Book Clubs are a hit! If you would like to come to the library in the mornings to listen to a book award nominee, check out our calendar to find out when the club meets : https://www.edline.net/pages/New_Providence_Elementary_Scho/2033098101253010450

South Carolina Book Award Book Club

October 30, 2008

NPES family,

The South Carolina Book Award Book Club has started! This week, I have been reading Roxie and the Holligans by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor to students who come to the library at 7am for our read aloud book club. We’ve been having a great time and are all wondering what will happen to Roxie next…if you are interested in the book club, checkout the dates and the books I will be reading here.

Happy reading!

Happy October!

October 14, 2008

It’s October!

As always, there is plenty of activity going on in the Library Media Center! Kindergarten and 1st graders are reading the South Carolina Picture Book Award Nominees and starting this week, I will be telling 2nd - 5th graders all about the South Carolina Picture Book and Children’s Book Award Programs. One thing I’m very excited about is our South Carolina Book Award Book Club. Starting October 28, I will be reading aloud some of the book award nominees. The book club will be open to 2nd - 5th graders and will be 7am - 7:30am in the Library Media Center. The club won’t be every day– there will be signs posted in the library telling students when the book club is. Teachers and parents are welcome to join as well!

Trying to think of a good book to check out? This month, books about leaves, pumpkins, apples, and MONSTERS are popular in the NPES Library Media Center.

Happy reading!

Mrs. Byrd Fort

September Updates

September 17, 2008

Wow! September has been a busy month in the Library Media Center!

We’ve kicked off our birthday book club. Students with August, September, October, and November birthdays received a letter about the club last week. Thank you so much to everyone who has sent in a check! Our first birthday book club birthday party will be in November.

September is National Library Card Sign Up Month and to celebrate, the library is having a contest! Students and teachers who show Mrs. Byrd Fort or Mrs. Gobbi their public library card will be entered in a prize drawing. There will be one winner per grade level and a teacher winner. Good luck!

Love,

Mrs. Byrd Fort
